I’ve struggled with mental health and addiction issues most of my adult life, but I’ve been lucky and have received phenomenal care and now consider myself to be in recovery. And I’m working very hard to maintain that.
I’ve been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder Recurring, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Social Phobia. I’m also an alcoholic. I’ve also recovered from self-injury.
I’ve been hospitalized for extended periods for depression in 2007 , 2010 and 2013, and I’ve been in rehab 8 times.
I’m currently free from depressive symptoms and my sober date is April 21, 2014.
In the rest of my life I’m an accountant – but am unemployed except for some freelance work, and plan to return to school in Jan. 2015 to complete retraining as a forensic accountant. I’m studying playing the harp. I’m an avid knitter and I love reading. I love to travel, but finances have curtailed that of late. I’m in my 40’s, single, no pets, and generally happy that way. I have lots of friends and am active in Women for Sobriety
I used to volunteer at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in Toronto, on their telephone support lines once a week, until the phone lines closed. I’m also a systems administrator on Bodies Under Siege which is a large on-line support site for people recovering from self injury. I’m a moderator on the website psychcentral.com which is a large, well moderated, mental health recovery site. I’m also a consumer rep on the constituencies committee of CAMH. I’m also a member and volunteer at Progress Place which is a clubhouse for the mentally ill.
I believe recovery is possible.
